Button's Birthday

When Someone Holds Your Hand

“Sorry we’re late!” Jen announced as she and Jake rushed into the game room at Enduring Grace in a flurry of umbrellas and raincoats. Jen was holding a pink ribbon in her hand, while Jake carried the huge, but wet, giant pink birthday balloon that was attached to it.

“I thought this balloon was a goner! The wind is blowing so hard that the rain looks like it is coming down sideways out there,” Jake joked as he tied the balloon to the leg of the table near what would be Button’s place of honor. “Plus, there was a big traffic jam on Main Street. Right, honey?”

“Oh geez, you guys need to hear this,” Jennifer explained, motioning for her parents, grandparents, Laney and her family, and her friend, Payton, to gather around. “So, like Jake just said, we were stuck in a long line of cars. We were going maybe five or ten miles per hour in a forty-five zone. I thought there must be construction or an accident because we could see cars ahead of us passing an obstruction in the road. But, it wasn’t an obstruction. It was Aunt Helen!”

They all gasped “no” simultaneously!

“Yes!” Jake insisted. “There she was in her big blue sedan going all of five miles an hour without a care in the world,” Jake said with his hands in the air. “Biggest what-the-hell moment I’ve had in a long time! Traffic on Main was backed up far behind us.”

Ida tried to come to Helen’s defense. “Well, it is raining.”

Jennifer shook her head. “Grandma, we hit the edge of the downpour about two miles from here. It was barely sprinkling when we saw Aunt Helen. You need to get her off the road!” Jennifer was adamant.

Ida poked Charlie in the ribs as he laughed, first at Jake and Jen, and then at something Joe had muttered. She and Laney exchanged a concerned look while the rest of the room couldn’t prevent their amusement at the hilarious picture Jen and Jake had just painted of Helen.

Laney interrupted, “Someone run out front and make sure she gets safely inside the building. It’s raining really hard right now and she might fall.”

Just as Joe had raised his hand and offered, “I’ll go,” Helen entered the room on the arm of her handsome Henry. At least, that’s how Laney saw it. Helen was dry as a bone while Henry’s gray suit had a few wet spots showing. Unbeknownst to them, Helen and Henry had seen each other a couple of times, and she had invited him to Button’s party.

“Good evening, everyone!” Helen looked darling in a new, light gray dress with pink polka dots. They looked like quite the couple with Henry in a complementary gray suit, crisp white shirt, and pink-and-blue-striped tie. “For those of you who haven’t met him, this is my friend, Henry.”

Henry was an instant hit! He had put a twinkle back in Helen’s eyes, and the group instantly adored him. He met everyone, spoke a little with each person, and seemed to feel right at home.
